The Top Ten
"Things to Do" in the Lake District
| With apologies to the late and great
"Fluff" Freeman, we've put together this top ten rundown of the
favourite pastimes, based on the views of those who have already
discovered that the Lake District always offers something worthwhile,
whatever the time of year. |
At ten -
"Go on Safari" |
| With five main animal attractions
featuring animals large and small, from Giraffe and Rhinoceros to leaf
ants and spiders, Cumbria has something for everyone - Trotters
World, Eden Ostrich World, South
Lakes Wild Animal Park, Lakeland Wildlife Oasis,
Aquarium of the Lakes...
At nine - "Shop 'til you Drop" |
| Not known as the shopping capital of the
world, the Lake District has one or two surprises in store, such as
lifestyle retailers Lakeland Limited's (formerly Lakeland Plastics)
flagship outlet, Hayes Garden World, where they sell much more than just
plants, and a host of smaller independent shops of all shapes and styles
such as Craglands of Grasmere. |
Coming
in at number eight - "Create a Masterpiece" |
| The Lake District landscape is perfect
for painters or all abilities at any time of year. Whether you work in
oils, watercolours or crayons, you are sure to be inspired by the sheer natural
beauty of this most beautiful corner of England. Photographers too,
flock to the Lake District, and "being in the right place at the right
time" holds especially true for photographs of the Lakes landscape. |
At seven
- it's "Become an Adrenaline Junkie" |
| Abseil, Rock Climb, Canoe, Paraglide, the
list just goes on and on. If you like to spice up your life with a
little danger, live on the edge or get your heart pumping, there is no better place than the
Lake District. But these activities come with a serious health warning.
Make sure you know what you are doing, or consult the experts at lakedistrictoutdoors. |
A new
entry at number six, and it's time to slow the mood right down with - "A
Walk in the Woods" |
| There's much more to the Lake District's
Forests than simply trees. Unique artwork lines the forest tracks in
Grizedale, whilst Whinlatter is England's only mountain forest, full of
peaceful walks and stunning surprise views. You are never far away from
trees in the Lake District, so why not explore this beautiful habitat
for native flora & fauna?
Still
there at number five - it's..... "Relax" |
| That's right, you don't have to do
anything if you don't want to. Why not just take a few days out from the
hustle and bustle of everyday life and simply relax. Give yourself some
"time & space" with a good book, or find a Lake District view and
simply take in the grandeur, or maybe watch an adrenaline junkie soar
peacefully overhead in a hang glider. |
At
number four - "Become a Lake District Gastronaut" |

| Over the past few years the food
producers of Cumbria & the Lake District have earned an enviable
reputation for producing fine food and drink. From fell-bred meats and
Cumberland sausages, to creamy cheeses, and fresh baked bread, there's a
huge range of fresh produce from the Lake District's farms, all complemented with
home brewed beers and traditional cider. So why not enjoy a gastronomic
delight and take a little piece of the Lake District home with you. |
Into the
top three we go, and at number three it's a perennial favourite
"Enjoy a Lake Cruise" |

| You can glide peacefully across the
waters of four lakes, and when the water is as calm as a mill pond and
the air crisp and clear there is no finer way to enjoy the scenic
beauty. For timetable information check with - Coniston Launch,
Windermere Lake Cruises, Derwentwater Bus Service or Ullswater Steamers.
Just missing out on the top spot, at number two - it's "Go for a Fell
Walk" |
| Climb a Lake District mountain? There are
plenty to choose from, or, for the less energetic, why not enjoy a
stunning stroll around Grasmere, one of the finest low level walks in
the country? Or how about combining a cruise with a low-level lake-side walk? At
Bridge House Hotel we have lots of walking information, and the really
good news is that we have our very own walking books, with instructions
to and from the door. |
