| Grasmere Sports and Lakeland Show dates
back to 1852 in its modern formal format, however, its origins are much
earlier. Like most rural meetings of this kind it probably emanates from
farmers gathering to exchange and barter livestock. Sheep roam freely in
the Lake District and annual gatherings were necessary to return strays
to their rightful owners. |

Grasmere Sports still attracts 5-10,000 spectators, but,
in its heyday, crowds were often three or four times that! Back in 1909 the
prize fund for the various events was £250. That is equivalent to over £23,000 in today's
money! The winner of the heavyweight wrestling won £15 (£1400eqv.) and
the Guides Race £10 (£940eqv). |

A Lake District favourite is the hound trailing where a
special scent is dragged up the surrounding mountains and the dogs follow the
course which starts and finishes in the main Grasmere arena. |
