| Grasmere Sports and Lakeland Show dates
back to 1852 in its modern formal format, however, its origins are much
earlier. Like most rural meetings of this kind it probably emanates from
farmers gathering to exchange and barter livestock. Sheep roam freely in
the Lake District and annual gatherings were necessary to return strays
to their rightful owners. Grasmere Sports still attracts 10,000 or more
spectators, but, in its heyday, crowds were often three or four times
that! |

course which starts and finishes in the main Grasmere arena. |
